Things To Do Nearby

Our rental on Flanders Pond sits right on the Schoodic National Scenic Byway, halfway between Ellsworth and the quieter, mainland side of Acadia National Park. You're close to world-class hiking, working lobster harbors, and a stunning stretch of coast, with far fewer crowds than Bar Harbor. Below are some ideas to get you started, whatever time of year you visit. There's always more to discover once you're here.

Drive times are approximate. Events, hours, and seasonal businesses change. Please confirm details directly before you go.

Schoodic National Scenic Byway

(Starts in Sullivan - you're on it getting here)

The byway begins at the Sullivan bridge and runs right past the road into The Haven, then winds down the coast past working harbors and water views all the way along the peninsula.

Baker Hill Preserve

(Sullivan - on the Punkinville Road on the way into The Haven)

A short loop, under a mile, that climbs to granite ledges with views of Mount Desert Island and Schoodic Mountain. Short and rewarding, and manageable for younger hikers.

Tidal Falls Preserve

(Hancock, about 10 min)

A reversing tidal waterfall and a free, scenic picnic spot on Frenchman Bay.

Frenchman Bay Conservancy preserves

(Sullivan and Gouldsboro, about 10 to 15 min)

Free local trails including Baker Hill, Long Ledges, and Taft Point, which juts into Flanders Bay with panoramic views.

Down East Sunrise Trail

(Sullivan, about 10 to 15 min)

A flat former rail line that's easy for walking and biking, running for miles through forest, wetlands, and blueberry barrens. Good for wildflowers and birding in summer, foliage in fall, and cross-country skiing in winter, though it's shared with ATVs and snowmobiles in season.

Schoodic Mountain and Donnell Pond

(Sullivan, about 15 min)

A short, rewarding hike to a bare summit with sweeping views over Frenchman Bay and Mount Desert Island.

Woodlawn: Barn, Museum, Trails

(Ellsworth, about 25 min)

An 1820s estate with a seasonal house museum and just over two miles of easy wooded trails in three loops, open year-round from dawn to dusk and home to deer, fox, owls, and bald eagles. A story trail with a book that changes each season and a tree ID walk along the Gander Trail make it good for kids, and dogs are welcome on leash.

Acadia National Park, Schoodic District

(Winter Harbor, about 35 min)

The quiet, mainland side of Acadia. Drive the one-way Schoodic Loop to Schoodic Point, where surf crashes against pink granite ledges, with far fewer crowds than Bar Harbor.

Schoodic Institute

(Winter Harbor, about 35 min)

Acadia's science and education center, with exhibits, ranger programs, and a national park passport stamp.
